I didn’t go over to my parents’ place for dinner because they were out with friends. And it was wet and windy outside so my rocker cousin and I decided to stay home instead of heading out for food. He made Thai Green Curry with chicken and we shared a bottle of red wine between the two of us – which went down really well, it being a cold winter night. He had rented the movie “The Rules of Attraction (2002)” and so it was with curry and wine, and being slightly tipsy that we slumped down onto the couch to watch it.
It’s based on the novel of the same name by Brett Easton Ellis, the same warped mind that brought us Less than Zero (1987) and American Psycho (2000) – both of which had been made into movies. American Psycho had been my favourite movie of that year and I missed out on Rules of Attraction when it was in cinema release. Anyways, a quick summary of the plot set in a fictional US college:
- sex
- drugs
- debauchery
- rejection
- betrayal
- suicide
- death
No … it wasn’t a happy movie but it was darkly humourous like American Psycho was. And very, very dark it was. In fact it was such a rush of emotions that my adrenalin is still coursing and I sat here blogging this with my mind buzzing. Or was it the alcohol?
I leave you with two angsty quotes from the movie:
- What does that mean know me, know me, nobody ever knows anybody else, ever! You will never know me.
- The seeds of love have taken hold, and if we won’t burn together, I’ll burn alone.
Good night, bonne nuit, o-yasumi nasai.

My favourite bit in the movie is when those two guys jump on the bed to “Wake me up before you go-go”… I’m pretty sure it was that. It was a George Michael song no less.
oh yeah they were dancing and miming to George Michael but it was “Faith”.
Ah yes! It’s been a couple of years since I’ve seen it. =) Faith: still very funny. Yes, that’s right. Zoolander’s ‘Wake me up before you go-go’.
miss L: hah! That’s right.
I saw this film a couple of years ago…I found it disturbing to see Dawson from the Creek acting like a total badass!
Hahah! Yeah it was good to see him like that. Then there’s also that kid who played Tara Reid’s boyfriend in American Pie (he was the one who went to buy drugs with Dawson). I say good for them – at least they won’t get typecasted.
