Ode to Perth & Medical/Dental Students
Tantive-iv a.k.a. The Virgin Undergraduate has written an ode to Perth. I couldn’t have worded it better myself. Big ups!
It includes some wry observations into the antics of the medical and dental students at UWA. Of which I know well because I use to hang out with them at uni and they form a quarter of the clientele at my restaurant. Sometimes the smartest kids are also the most devious. One episode went like this:
Med Student Friend (MSF): What you doing after lunch?
Me: Nothing, I’m done for the day.
MSF: Wanna see some dead bodies?
Me: Cool! But you sure it’s allowed?
MSF: Don’t worry! I’d give you a coat and you put it on. You’d look like one of us.
Me: Excellent!(in the lab)
MSF: *picks up body parts nonchalantly from the sliced-open cadaver*
MSF: This is the heart, this is the liver, that’s the stomach. And see all that yellowy stuff under his skin? That’s fat.(Lab supervisor comes up to me)
LS: Are you a medical student?
Me: Erm no. I’m in Engineering.
LS: I’m sorry but you have to leave.
MSF: *whispers* Don’t worry, next time …
Anyways, I HEART PERTH!

u flatter me mate, =)
i was inspired to write when i was browsing the news pages and pleasantly surprised to find out that the two laureates were from perth. quite frankly, when i was reading the news, i never expected them to be from WA, i just assumed it’s gonna be some guys from the eastern side.
say, just a thought, have u considered selling food to the mobile stall outside the med library? they only sell coffee and sausage rolls only so there’s definitely a market for real meals.
the v.u.: hmmm, I’m pretty sure that the mobile stall has a special license and/or arrangment with the library. Besides with the med library only half a block down from the shop, it doesn’t really makes much sense in terms of extra effort and finance needed.
I’ve also thought about selling inside the hospital but the food stalls inside Charlie’s have got a contract with the hospital to not allow competition.
But thanks for the tips – spoken like a true Commerce student!
I’m from Melbourne, and I must admit, after reading your blog, I do really want to visit Perth! I have never been but am very curious as to what it’s like. I’ve been to most of the other capital cities (melb, syd, hobart, brisbane), but just never Perth for some reason. everyone that’s been tells me it’s great, so I’ll be sure to pay it a visit sometime soon!!
girlstar7: Hehe am I that great of a spruiker for Perth?
But glad to make you feel the want to come here. I love Melbourne too – I feel that it’s an excellent in-between Perth and Sydney.
