A day of race-fuelled violence at Cronulla spread through other beachside suburbs in Sydney’s south last night, with one man stabbed and at least ten arrested.

The caused of the violence was the alledged bashing of 3 surf-lifesavers on Sydney’s Cronulla beach early last week by a gang of Lebanese youths (news story here). A protest to “claim back the beach” was then infiltrated by racist elements and a day of mob-led racial vilification was the result.

People of Middle-Eastern appearance on the beach were chased and beaten up; two men on a train were overpowered by a group of 20, while transit guards were powerless to help until police arrived and cordoned off the train station; 2 girls had their headscarves torn off and pushed to the ground and assaulted before police parted the mod and pulled them to the safety of a nearby pub.

What then followed this racial violence was also inevitable: reprisals by gangs of Lebanese youths.

Hopes that the violence had subsided by nightfall were dashed when, in an apparent retaliatory strike, a 23-year-old man was stabbed in the back outside a golf club at nearby Woolooware.

At about the same time, up to 50 carloads of youths smashed more than 100 cars with baseball bats and other weapons in the beach suburb of Maroubra.

Another long-time Cronulla resident, Susie, said she would consider leaving the area if the crisis was not resolved soon. ‘In the old days you might see a pub fight once in a while, but this is completely in a new league. It makes me want to cry.’

It saddens me too. There are bad apples in every bunch, and this has been clearly shown by the violent thuggery of both sides. I hope that the NSW police would get the situation under control soon.
