Dominic Knight’s thoughts on “The cartoon conundrum”
From his blog (Radar @SMH):
Jyllands-Posten is far from blameless, in my opinion, because I think a different standard of behaviour should be applied to the West. I think most Australians would agree that the Islamic world’s attitude to free speech troubles us, and that we would love to see it develop to become more like our own. But given that we are all aware of the problem, it doesn’t seem sensible or helpful to aggravate it like this. If you bait a dog with sharp teeth, and it bites you, is it a huge surprise?
More common-sense logic in the rest of his post. To be able to understand the outrage caused, and argue about the responsible use of “freedom of speech” does not make us “lefties” or “bleeding-heart liberals”. Dominic argues this eloquently.

No surprise indeed for provoking a big dog with sharp teeth with a big piece of meat and getting mauled up for it ;p
We have the right to exercise freedom of speech and expression but not the expense of insulting other people’s religion. We have to right to exercise freedom of speech and expression but we need to let our common sense guide us too.
michael: too right.
Micheal,
Not really. Freedom of speech does allow us to offend another’s religion, but we just have to be responsible for the repercussions it will cause.
Having said that, Danish newspaper should have known better.

I agree that freedom of speech comes with responsibility, but who sets those rules? The world seems to working on a ‘whatever is true to you’ system at the moment, and unfortunately, those two systems could not be further apart.
