As a female in the industry I can say a crappy bartender is a crappy bartender period. Male or female, part of your job actually the biggest part is customer relations. However just because a bartender hooks you up with free alcohol does not make them a good bartender it makes them a thief. They are stealing from the bar owner, every drink is a five dollar bill flying out the window. If the bartender is good at their job their customers won't mind paying full price. As for bartending schools I believe it is a waste of money and time. As a bar manager I would rather train someone with no bar knowledge but a great enthusiastic personality than have to reteach someone from a bartending school.

There`s a beautiful female bartender working at Metro (or at least, she`s there everytime I happen to go). She`s always cheery and armed with a smile. She`s quick and very good at her job too (the long island tea is crap though apparently). I love her. Sometimes I can`t help but admire her for a few minutes while I stand there waiting for my drinks.

girlstar7: oh we do know a couple of nice ones. And in general, we don't let bad service spoil our night - we just go to a different bartender. :)

Katie: exactly! that's one of the perks. With us, we sometimes get a double-shot for the price of one.

sophia: I do understand the need to put their guard up, but there's a difference between being cold and perfunctory, and pure disdain.

blur ting: agreed - these ppl have jobs because we customers buy their products and services. You cannot lose sight of that, even if a small minority of customers are indeed dickheads.

herman: Metro City - downstairs.

hah, I learn something new again today.

I don't know about bartenders but I saw how differently salesgirls treat customers. Last week, my son YK went into Crumpler shop in Raffles City. I went in about 5 minutes later and saw YK asking the sales girl if they had a particular model, she looked at him scornfully and gave him a curt reply. I watched from a distance away but didn't say anything (she didn't know YK and I are related). I went up to her later to ask about something else, she gave me the widest smile and was very friendly and polite towards me.

I guess she's probably tired of young school students going up to her, asking lots of questions but end up not buying. She has forgotten that it's the students ( their biggest customer base) who're paying her salary.

I agree with you that male bartenders tend to be more friendly. It's not because I am a female then he is being friendly to me. ^^ Male bartenders do treat my male friends friendly as well!!! My friends and I used to get a lot of free drinks and better services from this particular male bartenders until he quit the job! =(

Normally I would prefer to buy my drinks from a male bartender because they are more friendly to everyone. I do understand that those pretty female bartenders might get hit on a lot of times every week, so it's normal for them to put the guard out to protect themselves.

Good post. One of my friends gives rum & cokes (etc) to her friends and simply charges them for the coke. It's good to have connections. ;)
