Ultra Music Festival in Miami 2012 – doable? :)
Sony News @ Ultra Miami 2010 from Ultra Music Festival on Vimeo.
So I’ve been thinking of doing Ibiza for a long time but the strong AUD-USD exchange rate makes attending a festival in the USA a viable alternative. That festival is the Ultra Music Festival that’s held every year during March in Miami. Here’s some preliminary calculations with ballpark figures in AUD.
Airfare from Perth to Miami = $2500 (source: airfaresflights.com.au)
Accommodation at Hilton Miami (500m to the venue) = $150 per night x 5 nights (twin room shared) = $750 (source: miamibeach411.com)
3-day ticket to the event = $180 (holy fuck, cheap when compared to Aussie festivals!)
Spending money = $120 per day x 5 days = $600
All up, that should be about $4030 – rounding that up to $4500 just to be conservative. For a holiday that involves me seeing the USA for the first time, my love of all things dance music, all by the beach no less (sorta), I think it’d be a great experience.
The headliners for 2011 includes Tiesto, deadmau5, The Chemical Brothers, Carl Cox and David Guetta. It’s too late for the 2011 festival now but 2012 maybe? Now to convince me some friends to go with.

I wanna do nothing with you

I wanna do nothing with you,
See nothing with you,
Say nothing with you,
Because when you are around,
Nothing is everything.

Japanese dinner at Kanta

My brother discovered this place called Kanta in Langford that serves really authentic Japanese food. Above you see some of what we had: urumaki, grilled squid and eel (unagi) and agedashi tofu.
The place has 2 tables and a counter that runs the span of the kitchen. The chef runs a tight ship – you won’t be seated unless you’ve made reservations. We saw a couple getting turned down even though there were 2 spots opened for 30 minutes before the next booking. We surmised that the chef didn’t want to has his flow ruined – having people arrive at set times allows the chef to do things at his own pace rather than be rushed.
Oh and the food? Good.

China September 2010 – Scenes from the highway
These were taken on the way to Turpan.
Xinjiang is mostly desert with vast stretches of uninhabited land that are perfect for these: gigantic wind farms.

Dual Uighur/Mandarin propaganda. Be cultured. Be hygienic. Do not pee/poo all over the floor (my direct translation). Do no litter.

A highway rest stop’s toilets. Looked decent enough.

Guess what is this for?

U2 360 Tour, Subiaco Oval

The stage looks close by in this photo but in actual fact, it isn’t. It only looks that way because the thing was freaking huge. This was 13.5 minutes befores Jay Z would come on stage.

The closest we got to Jay Z. Pretty awesome for a warm-up act.

Bono and Adam Clayton on the big screen.
I wasn’t a U2 superfan but I’m glad that Sel convinced me to go. Now I can say that I’ve been to a U2 concert and I can see why people rave about them. The production was mega and it was super impressive.
Although, and it’s almost sacrilegious to say this but I enjoyed Jay Z’s music more.

One night in Melbourne

Went to Bob’s Kitchen in Glen Waverley. Shared a plate of 15 dumplings with Huishan …

And another 15 that were dipped in a chilli broth. We was full. We took 6 back to Hong who was still at the office working the late shift.

Huishan’s awesome boots.

Hong drove us to the Lucky Coq on Chapel Street where we met up with Chris and Phil. We had shots of flavoured vodka and some beers.

The toilets at the Lucky Coq had a funky wall.
And that was how I spent my last night in Melbourne for this most awesome work trip.
