Yesterday out of sheer curiousity, I downloaded WordPress 2.0.1 and started playing with it. It rocks. Especially when I find out that it can import all your Blogspot posts (including comments!) into it. I tested this out and it worked as promised. I was blown away.
Installing it does require a little bit of know-how about MySQL and Apache. That’s the biggest hurdle. If you have mucked around with hosting services before, this should not as daunting to you. But once you’ve got it up and running, using it is as simple as using Blogspot.
Hacking the template is also similar to Blogspot.
I had been toying with the idea of moving away from Blogspot because of the sporadic (but bordering on frequent) outages, as well as wanting to be able to back up all my posts. I’m thinking that I’m gonna be a blogger for the foreseeable future and backing up is gonna become quite important. Right now, if you haven’t figured it out, Blogspot does not have an easy way to do a complete backup (see their recommendation).
I’ve even bought my domain name already – mooiness.com. Heh.
What’s currently stopping me? Well, I keep thinking, “Am I changing just for the sake of changing?” Being able to do a backup is fine and all but other than that, there’s no other compelling reason. I can still put up with the outages – we’ve been promised by the Blogspot ppl that outages will be reduced. Then again, this is free innit? Who are we to complain?
Though if I move now, it will mean less posts to be imported down the line and possibly less chance of a fuck-up then. Hmm. Decisions, decisions.
Think I will mull this over again when I get pissed off by the next outage. In the mean time I am gonna get to know WordPress inside and out.
And Mikel, I may just take up your offer for you to do the new design when I do switch over. I can pay you with cash, food, or beer. I wonder if I can also scum some design work off Yue-Chin as well. Same payment options as those for Mikel. Heh. 🙂
