Mo’ Pho

Last night on the Headlines segment of Jay Leno’s show, he showed a takeaway menu from a Vietnamese restaurant called, wait for it …. “Mo’ Pho”. Now “pho” is a type of Vietnamese noodle but I don’t know what “mo” means. It could be a name. In any case it’s an unfortunate combination.

So I was there laughing my head off when my mom asked me what’s so funny.

Me: Look at that! Mo’ Pho!
Mom: Yeah? So?
Me: Mo’ Pho! Mofo! Get it?!
Mom: No. What is it?
Me: It’s a Vietnamese restaurant and they are called “Mo’ Pho” lah! Hahaha!
Mom: I still don’t get it.
Me: Hai-yah. You really want me to say it?
Mom: Yes.
Me: You sure?!
Mom: Yes.
Me: Mofo is short for “motherfucker”.
Mom: …

There. I think I’ve crossed the last decent boundary with my mom. If there ever was one! Hahah!

Well if you want to refer to something funny in Vietnamese, the ‘new’ Chinese restaurant (not sure if still open) at Burswood was called ‘Yu’, which means BREASTS in Vietnamese. Thanks to my brother’s gf, who couldn’t stop cracking up when she saw it. 🙂

leonard: yeah of course not! 🙂

michael: nope – haha she’s used to the foul language at home. 😛

herman: my mom is uber cool.

tina: no kidding!? Erm are the proprietors Vietnamese? Surely they must know? Or was it intentional? You know they only hire pretty waitresses, all of them wear that pyjama thing. Woohoo!

Lynne: cherry meant my post about the origins of the term “motherfucker“.

domestic rat: it is. But to most gweilos they just read it as “fo”.

leonard: mofo is slang for that term. Here’s a link.
